Tsunami

If you want good steak, sometimes you can’t be afraid to open the wallet a little bit.  We went to Tsunami in downtown Lafayette.  I had been once before, but it’s been a long time.  Mainly an upscale sushi restaurant, there are plenty of other options and drinks.

24 oz Bone-In Ribeye, medium rare.

1.  Price.  Tsunami lists the price of the ribeye as “MP” aka market price.  So depending on how much the steaks are, they translate that into higher or lower(usually higher) price for the meal.  Mine came in at $38.00.  That’s a good chunk of change, but also a good chunk of steak.

3.  Cooked to Doneness

That’s a well cooked steak.  Good thing too, it would be a shame to overcook that beauty.  This is a large piece of beef.  So my only advice would be if you like your steak cooked rather warm and pink in the center, order medium.  Medium rare will come out cool and a slightly darker pink.  That’s not a criticism, just a fact.  And one that I’m absolutely ok with.

4.  Taste

The online menu lists the ribeye as an “Allen Brothers Choice bone-in ribeye.”  I don’t remember if the physical menu in the restaurant clarified if the steak was prime or choice, but judging from the prices on the Allen Brothers website - http://www.allenbrothers.com/usda-prime-bone-in-ribeye-steaks.html - it must be choice.  Even still, the steak had wonderful flavor., so much so that is why I was confused as to whether it was a Prime or Choice cut.  It was well-trimmed and must have been well marbled with no large pockets of fat, but still deep ribeye flavor and so tender.  From first bite to last, it was all good steak.

5.  Seasoning

Being a Japanese influenced restaurant, you can taste undertones of soy grilled into the steak.  Along with a ginger caramelized onion butter topping the steak, there is plenty of seasoning and flavor to go around.  It made for a unique offering you probably won’t see at many other restaurants.  The best thing about it, even with those seasonings, it doesn’t overpower the ribeye, possibly because there’s so much steak.  Seasoning and marinades, no matter how long they sit or how potent they are, will only penetrate into the meat so far.  So there was a fine balance of steak and flavor accomplished.

6.  Bang for the Buck

Are you a steak fan?  Do you live in Lafayette, LA?  Then this is a definite recommendation.  It might be a special occasion thing, or even if you have to pinch pennies or request it as a birthday present.  Even considering it’s 38 dollars(possibly more, market price remember) it’s worth trying at least once.  Apart from that, there’s plenty of other things to enjoy at Tsunami.  Sushi, drinks, desserts.  And one of the best steaks I’ve ever had.

Petite Filet 5 oz (Medium-Rare) Allen Brothers Choice filet topped with shrimp and crab ginger garlic sauce

1.  Price.  $27.00.

2.  Look

Excellent.  No complaints here.

3.  Cooked to Doneness

A very good medium-rare.  Again, no complaints.

4.  Taste

I'll go with a B here.  I found absolutely nothing wrong with the steak, just to be clear. It just didn't have any kind of wow factor.  That was a bit disappointing, especially compared to the great taste of the ribeye.

5.  Seasoning

I'd give it a B+. It may have been the sauce, but the flavor seemed a bit muted to me.

6.  Bang for the Buck

The petite filet earned a lackluster C. Why? The offerings from Copeland's are comparably priced and markedly better.  That's a steak for which I don't mind paying almost $30. I love sushi enough to say I'll be back at Tsunami, but it won't be for the filet.  Either get the ribeye, or get 5 or 6 rolls.  You won't regret it.

Also, the mashed potatoes are pretty good, but I recommend sushi for a side. It costs about the same, and you're at Tsunami, man. Eat something raw.
